Reasons for Smaller Breast Implants
The shape and size of your breasts can have an impact on your overall physique and aesthetics. The skin that covers the breasts and the breast tissue goes through a lot of structural and aesthetic changes as we age and experience hormonal fluctuation. If you are unhappy with the appearance, size or shape of your breasts, you can enquire about a surgical procedure known as breast augmentation Mammoplasty. While some people may initially think that comparatively bigger implants are better, there are some reasons for choosing a smaller breast implant.
What is a Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty Procedure?
As you may be aware, a breast augmentation procedure is performed with the purpose of altering the shape and structure of the breast by placing a breast implant in the breast cavity. Breast implant placement helps alter the shape of your breasts for an altered appearance. This procedure can alter the projection and fullness of your breasts, changing their appearance.
If you have recently gone through a massive weight loss or multiple pregnancies, you may feel your breasts appear to have lost their volume. In other words, all the weight is in the bottom of the breast and the skin up top doesn’t have volume and is often just loose skin.
If you are experiencing any of these effects and are physically healthy, you can undergo a breast augmentation procedure. It needs to be noted that in order to undergo surgery certain criteria need to be met, including being a non-smoker, having realistic expectations and having good overall general health.

Breast Augmentation Choices – Implant Type and Size
Once you make the decision to undergo the breast implant procedure, there are two more decisions you need to make. Firstly, what type of implant are you going to get and secondly, what size of implant do you want? These are two crucial decisions that determine the outcome of your procedure and the overall results. Fortunately, your surgeon will consult with you on the pros and cons of each option and help you choose the right combination to get the results you want.
Should you get larger or smaller implants?
Although many people consider bigger breasts to be more appealing, once you learn their side effects, you may feel they are not worth going through. Some side effects of big breast implants:
- The extra weight.
- Exercise can be difficult and even painful.
- Bra strap indentations. The larger the breasts, the more they weigh. When you wear a bra, some of that weight is transferred to the shoulder straps. This can cause some pretty severe strap indentations on your shoulders. Not to mention the pain strap indentations cause.
Smaller implants have a myriad of benefits, including:
1. The look
The aim of a breast augmentation procedure is to alter the projections of the breast. If you were to get large breast implants, they may not fit well with your body and stand out. This would be more prominent when people who already know you notice the change after the procedure. If you go for smaller implants they might be in line with the rest of your appearance.
Book a consultation and speak with your surgeon about what is the best size for you before making a decision.
2. Bras
Bras are available in different colours, patterns, and styles. This is mostly only true for smaller-sized bras. Large implants mean that you have to get larger bras which are not always available.
3. No descending breasts
As you age, your breast skin is going to lose its elasticity and your breasts are going to descend. This is further exaggerated if you have large breasts. If you decide to undergo a breast augmentation procedure and have larger implants, it is very likely that they will eventually begin to descend. This is something you should consider before you decide to undergo a breast augmentation procedure with implants.
4. No neck pain and back pain
It is no secret that women with large breasts suffer from chronic neck pain and back pain. Large breast implants cause the same pain. The pain may eventually affect your ability to perform your daily activities like using the stairs, running and exercising. This pain is preventable if you choose to go for a smaller breast implant.
Not only are large breasts and large breast implants a main cause of chronic pain for many women, they also predispose women to skin infections. The lower edge of the breast is going to be in contact with the skin covering the underlying ribs, allowing sweat and bacteria to accumulate there. Overaccumulation of the bacteria in these creases can result in painful skin infections and rashes that will require medical treatment.
5. Sleep in any position you like
A good night’s sleep is important. It allows your body to function properly during the day. The quality of your sleep can depend on your sleeping position and how comfortable you actually are in your bed. Larger breast implants and breasts, in general, can make it difficult to get comfortable when trying to sleep. This is because you don’t have many options to choose from when it comes to comfortable sleeping positions. Many of the common sleeping positions are uncomfortable when you have large breasts.
You should definitely keep this in mind as large breast implants not only affect the aesthetics but also the normal physiological functioning of your body.
6. Have an easier recovery period after the procedure
Bruising and swelling during the recovery period after a breast augmentation procedure is normal. This can be increased further if you get larger implants. Your recovery period may be easier on your body and have less swelling and bruising with small breast implants. The recovery period is an important phase of your breast augmentation journey as any complications during this phase can affect the end result.
