Taking Your Newly Augmented Breasts (Implants) Running After Breast Surgery
Surgery is only the first step towards fuller and well-defined breasts. After your breast implant surgery, you will need a certain amount of time to let your body heal so that your breast implants will settle into their desired position. However, physically active individuals, are more concerned in returning to their exercise routines as soon as possible.
To better prepare yourself for a run or any strenuous activity after a breast implant surgery, the following tips can be of great help.
1: Wait for the Right Time
It is important to allow time for your body to heal to achieve the best possible surgical outcome. Forcing yourself to engage in running or any vigorous activities may lead to untoward signs and symptoms such as bleeding, breast asymmetry, significant pain, reopening of surgical wound, and other discomforts.
Usually, most surgeons recommend that you should wait at least 2-3 weeks before engaging in any strenuous activities or other work-related routine to allow your body to completely heal. After such time, you can slowly return to your exercise routine. Talk to your doctor regarding your recovery time before your hospital discharge.
2: Wear a Good Support Bra While Engaging in any Strenuous Activity
Wearing a good support bra whenever you run protects your new breast implants by maintaining its shape and position. By doing so, you can prevent breast asymmetry and other breast implant complications. Make sure that your sports bra is snug-fit and comfortable.
A tight sports bra may impair blood circulation within your breasts. Further, a loose sports bra may not hold your new breast implants in its proper position. Talk to your doctor regarding the best sports bra brands to make sure your implants are properly stabilised when running.
3: Massage Your New Breasts Per Your Physician’s Advice Before Running After Breast Surgery
When it comes to taking care of breast implants, your physician will include breast massage in the list. Your physician usually recommends you to do so in order to:
- prevent reduction in the size of the implant pocket
- misshapen appearance to the breasts
- maintain the soft feeling of your new breasts
Regular breast massage in the first 6 to 12 months after your breast implant surgery will not only reduce the potential for any of these conditions but also prepare your new breasts in engaging in any vigorous activities. Prior to discharge, your physician or nurse will teach you the proper breast massage techniques as well as when to perform them.
4: Watch Out for Any Discomfort
While most patients can engage in running 2-3 weeks after breast implant surgery, it is important to keep in mind that recovery time varies from person to person. For some, this time frame is enough for them to perform their exercise routine normally. However, some patients may still experience discomforts while exercising so it is important to be vigilant and watch out for any untoward signs and symptoms. If you experience any discomforts while running, do not force yourself and consult immediately with your physician for further medical management.
